All currently registered students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use the general access facilities. Use your CalNet ID and passphrase to login to computers in the general access labs. Printing is optional for a fee.
Note: You must have an active CalNet ID in order to access computers, software, and scanners in the facilities. If you do not have a CalNet ID because you are a new student or visiting affiliate, please see the CalNet Gateway for more information.
As a registered student, faculty, or staff member you automatically have an account using your CalNet ID to login to facility computers. This account is available to you as long as your CalNet ID is active with the University. Printing credit now carries over from one semester to the next as long as your account remains active. You may add printing credit to your account at any time. CalNet IDs are eventually deactivated for non-registered students and staff or faculty who have left the University (see User & Account Services for more information about account deactivation).
You are responsible for maintaining security to your account. If you think someone has obtained your CalNet information, change your passphrase immediately at the CalNet Gateway or bring identification and change your passphrase in person at User & Account Services in 2195 Hearst Ave, Room 111. Never give your passphrase to anyone. You are responsible for any printing fees charged to your account.
Printing at the facilities is optional at any time and will carry over from one semester to the next as long as your account remains active. Your CARS account will be charged a fee of $12.00 for print credit. The $12.00 is nonrefundable and unused print credit will be lost once a CalNet ID is deactivated. After you set up your account with printing, you are committed to pay the $12.00 fee. Each $12.00 fee billed to your CARS account will provide you with a combination of regular laser printing and color laser printing (color printers are available at LSMF and MMF), plus a $3.00 credit buffer for all printing (black and white and/or color) to accomodate for printer, toner, user, and consultant errors. Black and white pages printed to the color print queue will still cost $.60 per page.
1 black & white page (single-sided)= $0.06
1 black & white page (double-sided)= $0.09
1 color
page (single-sided) = $0.60
The $12.00 fee is based on the average user printing 200 regular pages on laser printer throughout a semester. You can add printing credit at any time in $12.00 increments as long as your current balance is less than $11.99. We encourage you to be resourceful and aware of the environmental issues of paper waste. Please take the necessary steps to spell check and preview your work before you print. In an effort to conserve resources, all printers in the facilities now default to duplex (double-sided) printing. You may check your print history and paper credit through the Print Management page by entering your CalNet ID and selecting a time span of print history.
Color Laser Printers (available at LSMF and MMF) print on high resolution paper stock. You may use your own photo or resume paper by selecting "Manual Feed" when printing. W&MF no longer allows printing on transparency sheets. No manual feeding is permitted in the regular laser printers at any time. No special paper (letterhead, colored paper, envelopes) is allowed to be loaded in the trays of the regular laser printers at any time. See the consultant on duty for assistance.
Print jobs are limited to 20 pages or at a time - large documents must be broken into separate, smaller jobs to avoid cancellation. Large files (primarily large PDFs or those that contain many graphics) will be automatically moved to the back of the print queue by the consultant on duty if the document severely delays printing for other users in the facilities. We suggest that you print these types of files during non-peak usage in the facilities, or separate the document into smaller print jobs.
Clients who have minimal printing needs can go to the Information Gateway located on the third floor of Moffitt Library, near the circulation desk. At this location there is a black/white printing service available for $.10 a page using a print card. Students can purchase a print card through library services in the Moffitt or Doe Libraries and print from any of the databases available in the Gateway, including Netscape, CD ROMs, Melvyl, etc. Printing is not available for applications that are not supported by the library (e.g. MS Office). This service is available through the library only and is not affiliated with the W&MF computer labs or printing account.
The computer facilities do not sell or loan out diskettes or CDs. You can purchase media at either the ASUC or at library services located at the south entrance to Doe Library. Bring in your own diskettes to save your work. Software stored on the hard disk will be deleted after logging out. You may use the hard disk to copy software as long as it
We do not offer support for any software or hardware you bring into the facilities.
Clients are allowed to mount other non-facility servers for the purpose of data access only. For example, if you need a file from another non-facility server you may FTP the file to your workstation. You may not access a remote server for applications, utilities, other executables, or unlicensed software of any type which includes fonts, programs, or copy-right materials.
Access to non-local facility volumes & servers is strictly prohibited in the facilities. Clients are restricted to using the local facility server.
Multiple PC and Mac scanners are available in the Moffitt Microcomputer Facility (1st floor Moffitt Library). One PC scanner is available at the Life Sciences Microcomputer Facility (2105 Valley Life Sciences Building) and one PC scanner is available at the Wheeler Microcomputer Facility (211 Wheeler). Appointments to use a scanner can be made through a sign-up sheet at each lab. You can sign up for 2 hours of scanner usage per day, up to 2 days in advance. Please read the policy and guidelines in the facilities for cancelling or missed appointments.
Once general access seats are filled to capacity, wait list sign ups for the next available seat (by platform) will commence. Automatic wait lists are available in MMF, LSMF, WMF, and DwMF. By entering your CalNet ID into the waitlist system you will be placed next on the list of users waiting for a computer. Paper wait lists are used when the automatic waitlist is unavailable and this list is manually controlled by the consultant on duty. Consultants will monitor wait lists, call out names, and seat you in order of sign up and platform request. If you are not present when your name is called, you forfeit your turn and must sign up on the wait list again to be considered for a seat.
You may sign up on both the PC and Macintosh wait lists if you have no preference on which platform you want to do your work. Please notify the consultant once you get on a machine, so they can take your name off the other wait list.
All of our facilities are staffed by student consultants who are there to assist you. They will help you answer questions about your printing account, answer questions regarding W&MF supported software, check out manuals, and troubleshoot problems.
One of our main objectives at the Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities is to create a pleasant environment where you can do your academic work. The budgetary restrictions we face each year means that replacement of abused and broken equipment, theft, and damaged materials becomes less of a reality. As a responsible patron we hope you take these cutbacks seriously and take care when using the equipment and other facility resources.
As an authorized user of the Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities, you are responsible for the following conditions when using the computer labs:
If an item has been misplaced at a computer lab, please follow these steps:
The Facilities will now allow hardware to be attached to the machines under these restrictions:
Headphones are available in all general access facilities and some instructional facilities. Users that lose or damage headphones will be charged a $12.00 fee, billed through CARS or reservation chart string.
Parents who bring children into the facilities must take responsibility for their supervision and control. Any child who is disruptive to other clients or causes damage to any of the equipment will be asked to leave (along with their parent).
Study groups may utilize computers in the facilities as long as the conversation and noise level do not disrupt the work environment of other users.
You will be given one warning if you abuse any of the conditions for using the Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities. A second violation will result in your account being disabled for two weeks and/or report to Student Judicial Affairs.
You will be immediately removed from the facility and your account will be disabled for misusing computer access in the following situations (this list is not all inclusive):
Your name will be sent to Student Judicial Affairs for further disciplinary action in these cases. Reinstatement of your account will be determined by SJA and W&MF management.
All staff consultants have the authority to remove you from the facility and/or report you for the conditions stated above. Campus Police will be called if you refuse to vacate the premises. You will automatically have the privilege of discussing your case with the W&MF management staff.
