New locations:Go Wireless with AirBears

Wireless cards available at the Moffitt Library Circulation Desk

The AirBears service provides numerous locations around campus for wireless access. For an updated coverage map and minimum hardware requirements, go to the AirBears homepage (http://airbears.berkeley.edu).

You can check out a wireless card for your laptop at the Moffitt Library Circulation Desk. The wireless card and installation software are available for a one-day loan period with the option to renew online.

Step-by-step installation instructions are provided on a CD or online at the SCCS AirBears page (http://sccs.berkeley.edu/airbears/). The Student Computer Consulting Service (SCCS) is located on Level 1 of Moffitt Library and provides consulting and technical support for connectivity issues, Monday-Friday, 10a-2p.

Bring Your Own Hardware!

The Facilities will now allow hardware to be attached to the machines under these restrictions:

  1. You will take FULL responsibility for your hardware.
  2. You will install the hardware on your own. Consultants will NOT be available for hardware assistance.
  3. Do NOT unplug our hardware (power or ethernet) under any circumstances.
  4. If the security restrictions on our machines do not allow a complete installation or if you cannot install the hardware on your own, you cannot use your device in our facility.

Color Printing available at LSMF and MMF

Color printing is available to facility clients in the Life Sciences Microcomputer Facility (LSMF - 2105 Valley Life Sciences Building) and the Moffitt Microcomputer Facility (MMF - 1st floor Moffitt Library).

The fee for color printing is $0.60 per color page. W&MF provides high-resolution paper for your convenience or you can "manually feed" your own paper, with the exception of transparancies.

A $3.00 credit buffer is provided for all printing (black & white and color) to accomodate for printer, toner, user and consultant errors. Clients can purchase paper credits in $12.00 increments, which cover both color printing and regular printing. Note: Black & white pages printed to the color print queue will still cost $0.60 per page.

Introducing CalMail (http://calmail.berkeley.edu)

UC Berkeley recently converted all UClink accounts to the new campus email system called CalMail. Email sent to addresses at @uclink.berkeley.edu will automatically arrive at the new CalMail accounts at @berkeley.edu. Usernames will remain the same, but emails should now be addressed to <username>@berkeley.edu.

Users now have the option of using either the old webmail client at Bearmail or the new webmail client at the CalMail site. CalMail email can also be accessed through mail programs such as Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook, or Eudora.
