Frequently Asked Questions

This is a list of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) that we hear in the Microcomputer Facilities. Please send an email to wmf-comments@lists.berkeley.edu if you have a question.

How do I get a facility account to log into the computers?

You already have one! Anyone with a valid CalNet ID has free access to the facilities. If you choose to print, you must create a printing account.

1 black & white page (single-sided)= $0.06
1 black & white page (double-sided)= $0.09
1 color page (single-sided) = $0.60

**If you send a black and white print job to a color printer you will be charged $0.60 per page.

Can I use my own hardware in the labs?

Yes! If you have hardware such as external USB drives, headphones, ipods, etc., you can attach them to our computers under these restrictions:

  1. You will take FULL responsibility for your hardware.
  2. You will install the hardware on your own. Consultants will NOT be available for hardware assistance.
  3. Do NOT unplug our hardware (power or ethernet) under any circumstances. You are not allowed to use our ethernet connections for your laptops.
  4. If the security restrictions on our machines do not allow a complete installation or if you cannot install the hardware on your own, you cannot use your device in the Facilities.

Please read more about our Policies for other facility restrictions.

Do you have color printers?

Yes! Color printing is now available in the Life Sciences Microcomputer Facility (LSMF - 2105 Valley Life Sciences Building) and the Moffitt Microcomputer Facility (MMF - 1st floor Moffitt Library). The fee for color printing is $0.60 per color page. Check our Policies for more information on Account and Printing Information.

What is my paper credit balance for this semester and how can I check to see how many pages I have left?

You can check your print balance and history at the Printing Management page. Print history will show locations of printing activity as well as debit and credit amounts for the past six months.

Where can I get help with Connecting@Berkeley (C@B) software, AirBears, and other connectivity issues?

Registered students can drop by the Student Computer Consulting Service desk, located behind the staff area of the Moffitt Microcomputer Facility. SCCS consultants are available for help with connectivity issues, not hardware support. Drop-in hours are generally from 10am-2pm Monday through Friday.

Check the Connecting@Berkeley website for basic trouble-shooting information on the C@B product.

What are your hours for this semester?

General access lab hours are posted and vary in each facility throughout the semester. We are closed on all University holidays.

Where can I go to get an email account?

You can now register for a CalMail account on the internet. Ask a consultant in any of the facilities if you need assistance.

What is a Home IP Account and how can I set one up?

You can get a Home IP account from the Berkeley Internet Link. Information about Home IPs and purchasing internet service is also available on the Communications and Network Services page.
